        It is believed that during the year 534 AD, Amreli existed as a city place with name Anumanji, as described in a vallbhi tamrapatra.  During the period of  King Dharmsena of vallbhi (517 AD) it is described as Ambrilika. In a "shilalekh" (1817) found in Nagnath Temple, Amreli discribed as Amarvalli & Girnavalli.  The ancient Sanskrit name of Amreli was Amarvalli. According to historian Narotam Palan, Amreli's name may be Amarsthali, Amrasthali or Amrapad
Amreli was the first in whole South India to start using calendar known as "Vikram Savant
 
Amreli an ancient civilization
             The evidence found by Archeological department of India in a near by village Machiyala (old Machenika) matched with the one  found in Hadappa of ARYAN culture of Sindhu Valley Civilization suggest that Amreli is an ancient Civilization.    
            Coins, ornaments, stones, toies, etc were found in a hill known as "Gohilwad Timbo" located on the bank of river Vadi & Thebi, believed to be of a MORYA times. A statue of Buddha also found in "Gohilwad Timbo" suggest that it is an ancient Buddha place too.
            During the Gupta time (200 AD to 700 AD) so many temples build in golden era of KumarGupta and tourist from north India mostly travels through Amreli during their visit to Saurashtra region. More than 2000 silver coins found with one side embossed by figure of "GARUDA" and other by figure of KumarGupta MahendraDitya along with the lable of 'Param Bagvat Mahrajadhiraj'.
            It is believed that a chines tourist hua-en-tsang, may passees through Amreli during their world tour, as chines coin of that era found in Amreli.
 
         City located on the bank of small river Vadi & Thebi.  Girdharbhai Museum and Bal-bhaven is located in the center of city, where Dr. Abdul Kalam (Formar President of India) takes visit few years ago. Amreli is also known for poet like Kalapi & Ramesh Parkh. Also Amreli has given the first Chief Minister to Gujarat, whose name is associated with this polytechnic.
